Having teams in class is a huge part of people getting to know each other and of how the class goes. I personally like to rotate teams and team leads after each deadline, but if something is working well don't feel like you have to mess with it! At the beginning of the year I chose the best returners/designers to be team leads for simplicity sake and then I randomly assigned newbies to each team. Make sure that the teams are always posted somewhere in the classroom for everyone to see. I also suggest that in class you encourage people to sit with their teams in order to work and communicate better, and make sure that they are not just sitting with their friends and socializing. Team leads should serve as mentors to the newbies on their team and should also serve as a communication between the editors and the staff. If someone isn't doing their work, the team lead should tell the EIC about it so it can be addressed sooner rather than later. It is also very important to make sure that as a team people feel as though their work is important and that they get the idea that they do not want to let their team down if they do not do their work. Encourage people to ask others for help and make sure that they know that they will have to ask for more work if they want it. Team leads are responsible for designing the spreads for the team and for also distributing the work among the team. They should be leading the team in discussions of what to cover and how to do it each class period and should also be checking in with each team member every class. For each team there should be a GroupMe chat that also includes the EIC.
